Customer name: Cruden Bay Golf Club
Location: Cruden Bay, Peterhead
Cruden Bay Golf Club’s manager, Les, approached Laings to modernise the club’s bathroom facilities and combine fresh, new spaces with high-quality sanitaryware. Being mindful of the existing layout, clever solutions were required to maximise the potential of the space, while also complementing the 124-year history of the site and its breathtaking surrounding views.
When discussing the refurbishment, the Golf Club expressed its interest in high specification facilities for their guests, with fixtures that would reduce water wastage while maximising on hands-free operability.
Due to the success of the first phase of the project, the Laings team were also involved in phase two. This involved a continuity of the modern design features implemented in phase one but for bigger spaces, working alongside the club’s new manager, Andrew.
Our most experienced bathroom designer, Ian, used his fifty years of knowledge to deliver a design that would meet the client’s brief. With Duravit toilets, sensor-operated taps and Geberit touchless flushes, the solution incorporated optimum cleanliness and easy maintenance.
Adding stunning Saloni wood effect tiling from floor to ceiling has provided a nod to the natural beauty and undulating landscape of the golf course outside. The darker panelling on the central basin run breaks up the space seamlessly, with the inclusion of LED lighting and a feature mirror to create the illusion of much larger facilities. Ian completed the spaces with chrome Keuco accessories and Hansgrohe taps, which have a lovely polished finish.
In the first phase of the project, the water system was upgraded to prepare for phase two, which involved continuing the same design concepts in ladies and gents toilets which were bigger and had the addition of shower cubicles.
For this phase, we completely gutted the rooms and started from scratch, retiling the space, adding new suspended ceilings with lighting, and installing the same electronic taps, solid surface worktops and porcelain basins from phase one. We also incorporated cut outs for hand towels, wall mounted toilets with electronic flush and new shower cubicles.
The spaces being refurbished in phase two are where golfers come into the facilities after playing a round, so we subcontracted a company to install resin floorings that wouldn’t be damaged by the spikes in golfers shoes and for safety reasons rather than floor tiles.
Overall, the process for this project saw a lot of collaboration between Laings and Cruden Bay Golf Club. Before installation for both phase one and two, the club’s committee members were invited to the Laings showroom to take a 4D virtual tour of the newly-designed facilities, before the team got to work bringing the space to life. We also incorporated different tiles into the spaces we refurbished in phase two, which were chosen by the manager, Andrew, and committee members of the club.
Overall, the updated space provides a bright, clean look with a contemporary finish and modern features for maximum cleanliness and minimal maintenance.
Our professional approach meant that any challenges were tackled quickly. For instance, as part of the project we replaced the suspended ceilings and added new wiring and lighting. Additional work was also carried out to upgrade the water system to allow for the sensor-operated fitments.
The completed installations allow for excellent continuity and cohesion throughout the Golf Club, and the bathroom design successfully balances both functionality and style.
Throughout the project, we developed a fantastic working relationship with the Golf Club. Laings designer Ian provided the following feedback:
“We’re getting constant praise from everyone about how the finished rooms have turned out - they’re absolutely delighted with them. Working on a large, complex project is always challenging, but when you’ve got an experienced in-house installation department handling the project, it makes a massive difference - it’s an overall team effort!”
When we caught up with the managers, they said they’ve consistently had guests admiring the finished facilities, some of which have come from around the world, and others even ventured to the golf club just to see the refurbished rooms!
