Recently celebrating an incredible 50 years with the company, today we introduce to you Senior Technical Designer & Supervisor, Ian Charles.
Ian started with the company on 20 August 1973, and over his 50 years with Laings has gained a wealth of experience, seeing huge changes across the business throughout this time with us. Starting under a Plumbing & Heating apprenticeship, Ian worked through the plumber grading scheme before taking on his role as Branch Manager in 1984 at our old Ellon branch.
Ian said the following of his journey with Laings: “I started designing bathrooms on a drawing board with scale stencils, so it’s amazing to see how things have progressed over the years. Going from producing 2D drawings with no computers, to using computers to create 3D visuals - and now being able to give customers a 4D virtual reality experience - I’m quite proud of myself that I’ve been able to keep up with all the changes!”
“I’ve had the pleasure of dealing with many return customers during my time, some of them which I’ve built great friendships with - I even once got a personal invite to attend one couples engagement party, and another couples wedding! But there’s just really nothing better than working with a customer from inspiration to installation of their project"
Ian added: “It’s difficult to apprehend that it’s been 50 years, but when you enjoy what you do, time flies!”
